The border patrol has done everything in its power to try to keep immigrants that want to cross over for better lives out of the United States. That doesn’t stop immigrants from finding new ways. The All American Canal is one of the ways that immigrants have found a way to cross the border without getting caught but it is also a high life risk. Men and women have made it to the other side but most of them don’t. The main reasons why California has a high capita per rates of drowning. The all American Canal is “known as engineering, hydrological and agricultural marvel, delivering enormous amounts of Colorado River water to arid Imperial County and turning a desert into one of the world's most productive farming regions (Marosi & Perry)”. Immigrants that are desperately trying to reach American Soil end up drowning in this canal because the water goes at a fast speed. Republicans of the United States want to put safety onto this canal because immigrants trying to swim across this canal drown. According to Marosi and Perry more than 500 people have drowned in this canal from 1942 to 1998. The water in this canal is very cold water that goes up to a speed of 84 miles per hour. The canal has a width of 150 ft and is about 200 feet deep. There has been a few adjustments made to this canal, such as adding Buoys every 50 ft but that is still too far for some men, women, and children that are desperately trying to reach the other side of this canal.
The article in the bottom talks about how the Kettner Bill stated that the All American canal should be connected with the Laguna Dam. It goes in depth of how payments were arranged and how land was suppose to be sold to more people but that did not happen because the committee believed that making that decision would allow immigrants to buy land of their own.
