The desert is one of the most dangerous ways an immigrant can cross the border through. Many immigrants have crossed the desert in order to get on the other side of the border. Thousands of immigrants have defeated the desert while other thousands didn’t. It is a tough journey but there has been many immigrants that have made it. There are many risks that they have to worry about other than the border patrol. Immigrants crossing the border have to be careful with rattlesnakes, centipedes, scorpions, poisonous lizards, other creatures, but most importantly temperatures and other humans. The border patrol is just another worry. People making their way through the desert have to be prepared to be fast, have water, food, layers of clothing if it is cold, or be able to beat the heat all at once. Men that are found in the desert by the border patrol are taken back into inspection and are fingerprinted in order to search for immigrants that have committed criminal offenses in the United States
Throughout the desert many border patrol officers have found dead bodies, water bottles, clothes, and objects that people have to leave behind in order to keep moving forward. One object many of this men and women bring with them is pictures. Pictures give them the determination and strength they need in order to get through this horrible passage.Very similar to the men in Bracero Program, as Ana Rosas describes in her book, “Abrazando el Espiritu”. Photographs have a huge part on crossing the border as Rosas states, “Each of the portraits his family shared with him fueled his determination to overcome such hardships and to dedicate himself to finding employment opportunities and relationships that would not make him unrecognizably foreign to himself and his family” (Rosas 66).

The desert is known to be one of the easiest ways to pay for crossing over. But the journey might just be the longest and hardest. Men and Women go days without water and most of them suffer from dehydration. In the book “The Devil’s Highway” by Luis Alberto, he describes the crossing of the desert as hell because that is what the bodies goes through without water or food. In Alberto’s book he tells the story of 14 year of Yuma who is going through dehydration. The best way he describes it is, “Your body panics and dilates all blood capillaries near the surface, hoping to flood your skin with blood to cool it off. You blush. Your eyes turn red: Blood vessels burst, and later, the tissue of the whites literally cooks until it goes pink, then a well-done crimson (Alberto 54).” This is a hard situation to defeat but that does not stop Men and Women that are determined to get through it. Many find ways to find water. Many carry knifes and cut up cactuses to get the little water they have inside.
People know the risk they are going to face when they decide to cross the border by making it through the desert but that has not and won’t stop them.
